Sacred Heart #23
“I have done my best.” That is about all the philosophy of living one needs.
Lin Yutang (1895 – 1976) was a Chinese writer, linguist, and inventor. From 1940 to 1973, Lin received six nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Chanting, prayers, meditation, macrobiotics, yoga, fasting, drugs, seclusion, ashrams, charities, monasteries, prostrations, pilgrimage – the paths to enlightenment are varied and numerous. Which one is best? Which one works? How should I live my life? Do I need a teacher?
Lin Yutang offers a direct and simple suggestion – just do your best.
No method or technique will avail us if we are not present at the moment. If we are present, no method or technique is needed. We need to stop measuring our spiritual achievements, particularly against nebulous ideals, and be present in our daily lives, be present in each moment. Enlightenment is not a destination; it is a continuing journey.
Keep it simple; stop thinking!
